Winterville is a small community located near the Mississippi River in west-central Mississippi. It's approximately 3 miles north of the city of Greenville and 4 miles south of Lamont. The town is mostly know for being home of the Winterville Site, a National Historic Landmark that features more than twelve major earthwork mounds from the period of 1000 to the 1400s C.E. (A.D.). The Winterville Site is located along Mississippi Highway 1 and are of the Plaquemine Mississippian culture, from which the Natchez Indians descended. Other earlier cultures also constructed mounds in the Winterville area. Archaeological evidence indicates that the Winterville people lived away from the mound center on family farms in scattered districts throughout the Yazoo-Mississippi River Delta basin. Only a few of the higher-ranking tribal officials lived at the mound center. Some of the mounds located outside the park boundaries were leveled by highway construction and farming before the site became protected as Winterville State Park. Other things to do in the Winterville area include gaming on floating casinos, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, camping and hiking. Nearby Greenville is known for its historic Nelson Street, a strip of Blues clubs that began in the 1940s. It's been compared to famous Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. Other attractions include the Delta Children's Museum and the Greenville Museum of History.

West-central Mississippi has a subtropical climate. There is a change of seasons with hot, humid summers, and mild, sunny winters. Spring and autumn are short, transitional months. This region experiences rain showers and humidity year-round, although it's mostly felt during summer when heat combined humidity makes it uncomfortable. The weather can be unpredictable in west-central Mississippi, and cold spells have been experienced in winter, but snowfall is rare. The best time to visit the area is between February and April, when the heat and humidity are not at peak levels. June is the start of hurricane season, but mostly affects areas closer to the coast.
