Choctaw
is a county located in central Mississippi. The entire county population as of the 2010 census was 8,547 people. The Choctaw County seat is the town of Ackerman. Choctaw County is well-known for being home to the Pearl River Resort, one of the southeast's premier gaming and family entertainment resorts. The resorts features large hotels and casinos with all types of gaming, world class shopping, restaurants, spas, salons, and state-of-the-art fitness facilities. The resort is also home to two championship golf courses and a family water-theme park. Other attractions in Choctaw County include Lake Pushmataha, Neshoba Lake, the Choctaw Museum, Nanih Waiya (an archaeological mound and cave mound) and the Choctaw Indian Fair. The latter is generally held in July and is four days of family fun, rides, Choctaw Indian traditional food, arts and crafts and food. Choctaw County is also home to part of the Tombigbee National Forest. This 67,000-acre forest contains over 2,000 acres of lakes and ponds and 600 miles of streams - all open to the public for fishing. Other activities include swimming, boating, canoeing, picnicking, and camping. Pavilions are available for small or large gatherings and reunions. In addition, 265 miles of non-motorized hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails traverse through the national forest.

Choctaw Weather & Climate

Northwestern Mississippi , like most of the state, has a humid, subtropical climate. The weather is mostly determined by three factors; latitude, the Gulf of Mexico to the south and the landmass to the north. Temperatures in the state are relatively mild due to the proximity of the Gulf and the latitude. A humid, subtropical climate means warmer temps and regular precipitation all year, rather than having a distinct rainy season. However, Mississippi's weather at times seems to follow a "feast or famine" situation, rather than the average - either a lot of precipitation or drought conditions. Hurricanes are possible, but mostly affects the southern coast. Mississippi is also in the path of two tornado alleys that run southwest to northeast across the state.
