Washington
is a small, but historically significant, community located in southwest Mississippi near Natchez. The town was named for General George Washington, first President of the United States. The town of Washington was the second state capital, after the city of Natchez, until the capital was moved to Jackson in 1822. The Mississippi statehood convention of 1817 met in the Methodist Meeting House in the town, which was later purchased by Jefferson College. The little town of Washington has many historical distinctions. Fort Dearborn was, for a time, the largest military installation in the U.S., with over 2,000 soldiers stationed there. Washington is also home to Historic Jefferson College, which is now a state park and museum. The college was created in 1802 and was named in honor of then-President Thomas Jefferson. Although chartered in 1802, it didn't become a fully functional school until 1811. Jefferson College was an all-male, college-preparatory academy, then later, as Jefferson Military College, a military-style boarding school. Jefferson College closed in 1964. The town of Washington was also home to the Elizabeth Female Academy, considered to be the first true womens college in the state, established in 1818, closing in 1845. Portions of Disneys 1993 movie The Adventures of Huck Finn were filmed in Washington. The surrounding area, including the city of Natchez, offers lots more historical attractions, museums, shopping, local festivals and special events and restaurants. Natchez is also the southern terminus of the historic Natchez Trace Parkway.

Washington Weather & Climate
West-central Mississippi has a subtropical climate. There is a change of seasons with hot, humid summers, and mild, sunny winters. Spring and autumn are short, transitional months. This region experiences rain showers and humidity year-round, although it's mostly felt during summer when heat combined humidity makes it uncomfortable. The weather can be unpredictable in west-central Mississippi, and cold spells have been experienced in winter, but snowfall is rare. The best time to visit the area is between February and April, when the heat and humidity are not at peak levels. June is the start of hurricane season, but mostly affects areas closer to the coast.
