Belzoni
is located in Humphreys County in the Mississippi Delta Region of the Yazoo River in the west-central part of the state. The population is around 2,600 people. This area of Mississippi was proclaimed "Farm-Raised Catfish Capital of the World" in 1976 by then Governor Cliff Finch. It produces more farm-raised catfish than any other place in the U.S. In fact, 40,000 acres of Humphreys County is underwater, used to grow catfish. Approximately 60 percent of U.S. farm-raised catfish are grown within a 65-mile radius of the town of Belzoni. The town is most well-known for its annual World Catfish Festival, generally held in April. The festival has received several awards including being included in the "Top 100 Events in North America" and "Top 20 Events in the Southeast." The festival is held in the whole downtown area of Belzoni and attracts more than 10,000 visitors each year. Live entertainment features blues, country, gospel music and more. There are arts and crafts vendors, lots of good food, a 5K run/walk and free activities for children. In addition, there's a catfish eating contest and a Miss Catfish and Little Miss Catfish pageants. Belzoni is a family-friendly place with tons of old-town charm and amenities to accommodate guests.

West-central Mississippi has a subtropical climate. There is a change of seasons with hot, humid summers, and mild, sunny winters. Spring and autumn are short, transitional months. This region experiences rain showers and humidity year-round, although it's mostly felt during summer when heat combined humidity makes it uncomfortable. The weather can be unpredictable in west-central Mississippi, and cold spells have been experienced in winter, but snowfall is rare. The best time to visit the area is between February and April, when the heat and humidity are not at peak levels. June is the start of hurricane season, but mostly affects areas closer to the coast.
