West-Point is located in northeast Mississippi in the region known as the Golden Triangle, just across the Alabama state line. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,307, but it has grown to over 13,500 people. This quaint community had its beginnings as an agricultural and railroad town. Today, it's home to two major universities, a community college, has an extensive industrial base, an excellent regional airport, and international port access via the Tenn-Tom waterway. All of this and the surrounding rich, fertile farm land have made West Point one of the fastest growing areas of Mississippi. It's been named one of the "Top 100 Small Towns in America". The city of West Point is well known for its annual Prairie Arts Festival, generally held on the Saturday prior to Labor Day in the downtown area. The festival includes a fine arts and crafts show, four stages of live music, a classic cars show, rides, lots of "down-home style" cooking and more than 600 exhibits. The Prairie Arts Festival has been recognized as one of the top ten events in the south, and is one of the largest arts and crafts festivals in the country. The windmill has become the unofficial symbol of West Point, and so the famous Prairie Arts Festival has also adopted the windmill image as part of its logo. Recreational activities in the West Point area include fishing, swimming, hiking, golf, and tennis. Old Waverly, located outside of West Point, is recognized as one of Mississippis top golf courses.

West Point Weather & Climate

Northeastern Mississippi's climate is influenced by its mid-latitude location and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico. The Koppen classification is humid subtropical, with long, hot, humid summers and short, mild winters. Precipitation in northwest Mississippi is slightly higher than the southern half of the state, and temperatures are slightly lower. In summer, large masses of warm, moist air, known as a maritime tropical air mass, moves northward from the Gulf of Mexico and dominates the weather patterns. In autumn, the polar jet stream begins to move southward bringing cool, dry air to the region. Snowfall is possible, but rare. Mississippi is in the path of tropical storms and hurricanes. Although the coast is mostly affected by these storms, even the northwest section may experience heavy winds and torrential rainfall.
