Amory is located in northeast Mississippi in Monroe County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,316 residents. Amory was the first planned community in Mississippi. A city was needed by the Kansas City, Memphis & Birmingham Railroad as a midway point between Memphis, Tennessee and Birmingham, Alabama. So, the city of Amory was laid out and became a reality in 1887. In honor of its railroad history, the city of Amory holds an annual Railroad Festival in Frisco Park in the downtown. The festival offers good old southern foods, such as barbecue, fried catfish and apple fritters. Other features of the festival include rides, an arts and crafts show, and live music. It's usually held in April and attracts as many as 40,000 people - rain or shine. The city of Amory is also host to Entertainment for Education, also known as "Stars Over Mississippi" in September. This special event features well-known celebrities who help raise funds for local scholarships. Past performers have included Vince Gill, Kathie Lee Gifford, Brad Paisley and Whoopie Goldberg. Other attractions in Amory include a farmer's market known as the Frisco Homegrown Market. The city also has the unique distinction for being the place where Carl Perkins wrong the song "Blue Suede Shoes" during a trip there for a concert with Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash.

Amory Weather & Climate

Northeastern Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate. There is a definite change of seasons in Mississippi, although a much "milder" form of winter, spring and fall than states further north. Temperatures remain pleasant year-round, for the most part, except in summer when high humidity combined with heat makes it uncomfortable. The terrain in northeastern Mississippi ranges from flatlands to rolling hills and lush forested areas. Average annual precipitation is 50 inches and distributed fairly evenly throughout the year. March is the wettest month and October is the driest. Snowfall is less than three inches each year.
