Ackerman
is a town located in Choctaw County in central Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,510 residents. It's the county seat of Choctaw County and Mississippi Highway 15 passes through the town. Ackerman is located near the headwaters of the Yockanookany River, which is a tributary of the Pearl River. It's also near the Tombigbee National Forest, which contains over 2,000 acres of lakes and ponds and 600 miles of streams - all open to the public for fishing. The 67,000-acre Tombigbee National Forest lies within five Mississippi Counties, in descending order of land area, they are Winston, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Pontotoc and Oktibbeha Counties. In addition to fishing, other activities in the forest include swimming, boating, canoeing, picnicking, and camping. Pavilions are available for small or large gatherings and reunions, etc. In addition, 265 miles of non-motorized hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails traverse through the forest. Approximately 90 miles of designated motorized trails are open to off-highway vehicles. The Natchez Trace Parkway also passes through the region near the town of Ackerman.

Central Mississippi has a humid, subtropical climate. Winters are short and mild and summers are long and humid. Spring and autumn are transition months and usually quite pleasant. In Mississippi, summer temperatures vary little from one part of the state to another. During winter, however, the southern coast is much warmer than northern regions, due to the influence of the Gulf of Mexico. Humidity in summer is a problem statewide, with the comfort index being 26 out of 100, where the higher the number, the more comfortable. The north-central region of the state averages 53 inches of precipitation per year. Some snow usually falls in the northern and central sections. Mississippi lies in the path of hurricanes, although the southern coast is much more affected by these types of storms. Two tornado alleys cross the state, running from the southwest to northeast.
