Brooksville is a small town located in Noxubee County in east-central Mississippi. The population is approximately 1,200 people. Brooksville is just east of the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge. The Black Prairie Wildlife Management Area is north of town. The Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge consists of 48,000 acres that serves as a resting and feeding area for migratory birds and as an example of proper land stewardship. Also, the refuge extensively manages land for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. The Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge was obtained in the 1930s through the Resettlement Administration. During the 1930s, the land was controlled by the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act. The land was established as a National Wildlife Refuge in 1940 to ensure the wetlands would continue to be protected, providing migratory bird species and other animals a safe haven. Of the 48,000 acres of land, approximately 44,500 acres consists of bottomland and upland forest. A variety of species inhabit the refuge, including quail, deer, and turkey. Two major lakes, four green tree reservoirs and 16 smaller reservoirs are located within the refuge. It also contains several trails that provide access to wildlife observation points. These include Goose Overlook above Bluff Lake, Morgan Hill that overlooks Loakfoma Lake, and the Bluff Lake Boardwalk. The latter is a 1,000-foot-long boardwalk that provides access to an overlook at Cypress Island on Bluff Lake.

Brooksville Weather & Climate

West-central Mississippi has a subtropical climate that is warm and wet year round. There is a mild change of seasons with hot, humid summers, short, sunny winters and transitional autumn and springs. This region experiences rain showers and humidity year-round, although it's mostly felt during summer when heat combined humidity makes it uncomfortable. The weather can be unpredictable in west-central Mississippi, and cold spells have been experienced in winter, but snowfall is rare. The best time to visit the area is between February and April, when the heat and humidity are not at peak levels. June is the start of hurricane season, but mostly affects areas closer to the coast. Tornadoes are another possibility.
