Eupora
is a small city located in Webster County in north-central Mississippi. The population is approximately 2,336 residents. The area that is now the town of Eupora was originally known as Early Grove. In 1888, the Georgia-Pacific Railroad began surveying a route on the north side of the Big Black River. The final route was a line down the Big Black Valley, passing through the site of present-day Eupora. Engineers laying out the route of the railroad boarded in the home of Jim Eudy and his wife, Eupora. The engineers were so struck with name Eupora that they decided the new town should receive that name. The settlement was given the name of Eupora and incorporated in 1889. Eupora is near the Natchez Trace Parkway, also know as Natchez Trace or simply "the Trace." This National Parkway commemorates the historic Old Natchez Trace and preserves sections of the original trail. The two-lane road of the parkway covers 444 miles from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee. There are many historic sites on the Parkway to see, including the Meriwether Lewis Museum and the Mississippi Craft Center. There are also several beautiful waterfalls to view along the route. Access to them does require a bit of hiking from the parkway, however. In addition, parts of the original Natchez Trace trail are still accessible. Central Mississippi has a humid, subtropical climate. Winters are short and mild and summers are long and humid. Spring and autumn are transition months and usually quite pleasant. In Mississippi, summer temperatures vary little from one part of the state to another. During winter, however, the southern coast is much warmer than northern regions, due to the influence of the Gulf of Mexico. Humidity in summer is a problem statewide, with the comfort index being 26 out of 100, where the higher the number, the more comfortable. The north-central region of the state averages 53 inches of precipitation per year. Some snow usually falls in the northern and central sections. Mississippi lies in the path of hurricanes, although the southern coast is much more affected by these types of storms. Two tornado alleys cross the state, running from the southwest to northeast.
