Columbus is located in northeast Mississippi about 63 miles south of Tupelo. It lies above the Tombigbee River and is the county seat for Lowndes County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,640 residents. Columbus is part of an area of northeast Mississippi called The Golden Triangle, which also consists of West Point and Starkville in the counties of Lowndes, Clay and Oktibbeha. Columbus is the birthplace of the famous playwright Tennessee Williams, author of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire. His birthplace, formerly the rectory of nearby St. Pauls Episcopal Church, is now the welcome center for the town. Columbus boasts many stately historic homes, and won a Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust by Historic Preservation in 2010. Many of the antebellum homes are open year-round for tours. For history buffs, the Friendship Cemetery is a good place to visit. It contains the gravesites of many prominent Mississippians, as well as Union and Confederate soldiers from the Civil War. According to local historians, Memorial Day got its start in Columbus when women of the town decorated the graves of fallen soldiers. Columbus is also home to the Mississippi University for Women and the Columbus Air Force Base, which trains nearly one third of the nation's best Air Force pilots. For outdoor recreation, the Tenn-Tom Waterway offers excellent fishing, water-skiing, swimming and jet skiing. Six golf courses are within thirty minutes of Columbus, including Old Waverly, which was voted one of the top 100 courses in the United States.

Columbus Weather & Climate

Northeastern Mississippi's climate is influenced by its mid-latitude location and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico. The Koppen classification is humid subtropical, with long, hot, humid summers and short, mild winters. Precipitation in northwest Mississippi is slightly higher than the southern half of the state, and temperatures are slightly lower. In summer, large masses of warm, moist air, known as a maritime tropical air mass, moves northward from the Gulf of Mexico and dominates the weather patterns. In autumn, the polar jet stream begins to move southward bringing cool, dry air to the region. Snowfall is possible, but rare. Mississippi is in the path of tropical storms and hurricanes. Although the coast is mostly affected by these storms, even the northwest section may experience heavy winds and torrential rainfall.
