Richton
is a small town located in Perry County in southern Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,068 full-time residents. Richton is part of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and is about 75 miles from the Gulf Coast region. As such, Richton enjoys all the same attractions and activities of the larger city. Hattiesburg is home to The University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University. Just south is Camp Shelby, which is the largest National Guard training base east of the Mississippi River. The area surrounding Richton offers an abundance of cultural opportunities and special events. The historic downtown area of Hattiesburg features the Saenger Theater and the Historic Train Depot, along with art galleries, unique shops and restaurants. This 25-block area has one of the best collections of Victorian homes in the state, and in 2011, it was named one of the "Great Places in America. Other places to visit include the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum, the African American Military History Museum, and the Hattiesburg Zoo. Longleaf Trace is Mississippi's only certified Rails to Trails Conservancy project and offers a multi-use trail spanning 42 miles from Hattiesburg to Prentiss, Mississippi.

Southern Mississippi has a semi-tropical climate. This part of the state that's in close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico tends to be humid with lots of rainfall, and very little difference between summer and winter conditions. Average rainfall per year is 56 to 60 inches, with well over 180 days of sunshine annually. Snowfall is rare in southern Mississippi. Tropical storms and hurricanes are possible in late summer and fall. However, plenty of warning time is generally given for these types of storms.
