Laurel
is a city located in Jones County in southeast Mississippi. It's part of the region known as the Pine Belt. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,548 residents. Laurel is a lovely town with oak-lined streets and stately early 20th century homes. Mississippi's oldest art museum, the Lauren Roger Museum of Art, is located in Laurel. Founded as a lumber town in 1882, the town of Laurel radiates plenty of southern charm. The town flourished during the timber industry of the late 1800s/early 1900s. In 1893, the first lumber mill was opened, and soon followed by many others. Laurel became a very large milling town, and by the early 1900's, it milled and shipped more yellow pine than anywhere else in the world. Today the city of Laurel is known as a prime retirement destination. It has the distinction of being one of only 21 Certified Retirement Cities in the state of Mississippi. The town of Laurel was evaluated on affordable cost of living, low taxes, low crime rate, access to quality medical care, recreation, educational and cultural opportunities, and on being a warm and welcoming community. Southern Mississippi has a semi-tropical climate. This part of the state that's in close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico tends to be humid with lots of rainfall, and very little difference between summer and winter conditions. Average rainfall per year is 56 to 60 inches, with well over 180 days of sunshine annually. Snowfall is rare in southern Mississippi. Tropical storms and hurricanes are possible in late summer and fall. However, plenty of warning time is generally given for these types of storms. The comfort index, which is based on humidity during the hot months, is 26 out of 100, with a higher number being more comfortable.
