Hattiesburg
is located in south-central Mississippi, about 75 miles from the Gulf Coast. As of 2013, the population was 47,556. Founded in 1882, Hattiesburg gained the nickname "The Hub City" due to its development as a center for the lumber and railroad industries. Hattiesburg is home to The University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University. Just south of Hattiesburg is Camp Shelby, which is the largest National Guard training base east of the Mississippi River. A good way to start your exploration of the city is to stop by the Hattiesburg Visitors Center at the intersection of I-59 and Highway 49. This is a city that offers an abundance of cultural opportunities and special events. The historic downtown area features the Saenger Theater and the Historic Train Depot, along with art galleries, unique shops and restaurants. Other places to visit in Hattiesburg include the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum and the African American Military History Museum. Longleaf Trace is Mississippis only certified Rails to Trails Conservancy project and offers a multi-use trail spanning 42 miles from Hattiesburg to Prentiss, Mississippi. The Hattiesburg Zoo is another favorite tourist attraction in the city. In 2011, the Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood District was named one of the "Great Places in America." This 25-block neighborhood has one of the best collections of renovated Victorian-era houses in the state. Each year, the historic neighborhood celebrates with the Annual Victorian Candlelit Christmas and Holiday Tour of Homes.

Southern Mississippi has a semi-tropical climate. This part of the state that's in close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico tends to be humid with lots of rainfall, and very little difference between summer and winter conditions. Average rainfall per year is 56 to 60 inches, with well over 180 days of sunshine annually. Snowfall is rare in southern Mississippi. Tropical storms and hurricanes are possible in late summer and fall. However, plenty of warning time is generally given for these types of storms.
