Moss-Point
is a historic city located in Jackson County along the southern Gulf Coast of Mississippi, and at the junction of two rivers. As of the 2010 census, the population was 13,704. It's about 100 miles east of New Orleans and 39 miles west Mobile. In 2005, Moss Point was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, and much of the city was destroyed or flooded. The area that is now the city of Moss Point was first discovered by French explorer, D'Iberville. It was nearly a century, however, before there was much activity around Moss Point. Jackson County was organized in 1812, and following the Battle of New Orleans, some men settled at Moss Point. These early settlers established a thriving sawmill businesses. Shallow-draft schooners loaded lumber for foreign ports in Europe, Mexico, South America, and Cuba and by the late 1800s, Moss Point was a lumber empire. The city of Moss Point incorporated in 1901, and was the first and only community in Mississippi to be incorporated as a city before first being a village or a town. Today, Moss Point is a lovely community of beautiful old oak trees, magnolias and pines, flowering azaleas, camellias, wisteria and crepe myrtle. The junction of two rivers, Pascagoula and Escatawpa, are located here, along with clear lakes and bayous. Things to do include swimming, fishing, boating, water-skiing, sailing, crabbing, shelling, hiking and picnicking. Moss Point has convenient shopping, and excellent medical care, which has attracted a large population of retirees.

The south-central coast of Mississippi has a tropical climate that is defined by the Gulf of Mexico. Winters are short and mild and summers are long and humid. Winter temperatures average in the upper 50s. Summer temperatures range from the lower 80s in May to the mid 90s by August. The humidity makes it seem much hotter at times. Rain can fall anytime of the year, and thunderstorms are possible in the summertime. Average annual rainfall is 62 inches. Snowfall is rare. During the spring and fall months, temperatures are usually very pleasant with lots of sunshine. Mississippi lies in the path of hurricanes moving northward from the Gulf of Mexico during the late summer and fall.
