Gulf-Hills
is a census-designated place in southeast Mississippi that's part of the Pascagoula metropolitan area. The population of Gulf Hills is around 5,000. The community sits along the Mississippi Gulf Coast just south of Interstate 10. Gulf Hills began as a small, isolated, mostly Roman Catholic settlement in the mid-1800s. The old name for the area was Bayou Puerto. In the year 1900, nearly every male resident of the settlement made their living in the seafood industry. Things changed in the mid-1920s when a group of investors from Chicago and New York visited the area and became enamored with it. They saw how the warm climate and natural beauty drew people from the Midwest in the wintertime, trying to escape the cold and snow. So they chose an area in eastern St. Martin at the mouth of Old Fort Bayou and Bayou Puerto, and built a winter resort they named Gulf Hills. The Chicago developers also envisioned selling 3-acre homesites to wealthy northerners who would come to escape winter's cold and eventually retire here. Billed as the "Golf City of the Gulf Coast," Gulf Hills covered 667 acres with 249 of them dedicated as fairways, parks, playgrounds and waterways. The community had its ups and downs during the Great Depression and World War II, but by the 1950s and 1960s, it had become a popular resort for celebrities like Elvis Presley, Judy Garland, Mary Ann Mobley and Gary Collins. Today, Gulf Hills is a beautiful year-round residential community - still popular for its well-manicured greens and lush fairways.

The south-central coast of Mississippi has a tropical climate that is defined by the Gulf of Mexico. Winters are short and mild and summers are long and humid. Winter temperatures average in the upper 50s. Summer temperatures range from the lower 80s in May to the mid 90s by August. The humidity makes it seem much hotter at times. Rain can fall anytime of the year, and thunderstorms are possible in the summertime. Average annual rainfall is 62 inches. Snowfall is rare. During the spring and fall months, temperatures are usually very pleasant with lots of sunshine. Mississippi lies in the path of hurricanes moving northward from the Gulf of Mexico during the late summer and fall.
