Gautier
is a city located in the southeast corner of Mississippi along the Gulf Coast. It's in Jackson County, and part of the Pascagoula metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,572. Locals pronounce the name "GO-chay," and descendants of the Gautier family, for which the town was named, still live in the area. The city of Gautier is an upscale bedroom community with lots of opportunities for recreation and eco-tourism. There are two championship golf courses located in Gautier, along with many grand, historic homes and properties surrounded by bayous, centuries old oaks and wetlands on three sides. The city's population is expected to steadily rise during the coming years, due to the abundance of vacant lands and the high growth projection of the entire Gulf Coast Region. Homesteader Fernando Upton Gautier settled here in 1867 and established a lucrative sawmill, from which the town sprung. Today, his home, known by locals as "The Old Place," is owned by the descendants of Fernando Gautier and is used for private and public events. Gautier was one of the many towns on the coast severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Many of the coastal homes were either destroyed or flooded, but the historic home of Fernando Upton Gautier remained intact. Today, Gautier has rebuilt and is a wonderful place to visit and explore Mississippi's Gulf Coast region. The beautiful beaches, water sports, beachcombing for seashells, golf, seafood restaurants, eco-tourism - it's all within minutes of Gautier.

The south-central coast of Mississippi has a tropical climate that is defined by the Gulf of Mexico. Winters are short and mild and summers are long and humid. Winter temperatures average in the upper 50s. Summer temperatures range from the lower 80s in May to the mid 90s by August. The humidity makes it seem much hotter at times. Rain can fall anytime of the year, and thunderstorms are possible in the summertime. Average annual rainfall is 62 inches. Snowfall is rare. During the spring and fall months, temperatures are usually very pleasant with lots of sunshine. Mississippi lies in the path of hurricanes moving northward from the Gulf of Mexico during the late summer and fall.
