Quitman
is located in Clarke County along the Chickasawhay River in southeast Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,323. It serves as the county seat for Clarke County. The town of Quitman lies near the Alabama border. U.S. Route 45 bypasses the city to the east, as it leads north to the city of Meridian and south to Waynesboro. Mississippi Highway 18 passes through the center of Quitman. For outdoor activities, Bonita Lakes is just a short drive from Quitman. It includes a 3,300-acre park with 3 lakes, the Long Creek Reservoir and Lakeview Golf Course. Hiking trails, equestrian trails, picnic facilities and pavilions, boat ramps, paddle boats and fishing are available at Bonita Lakes. Lake Okatibbee is another beautiful lake near Quitman with 3,800-acres for boating, fishing, swimming and water-skiing. Other nearby attractions include Dunn's Falls, the Meridian Museum of Art, and Around Town Carousels Abound, a public arts project in Meridian that contains 62 colorfully-painted carousel horses.

East-central Mississippi, near the Alabama border, has a humid, subtropical climate with hot, muggy summers and mild, rainy winters. This region is one of the rainiest in the United States. Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. Snowfall is rare. Tropical storms and hurricanes are quite common off the Gulf of Mexico, and bring high winds and torrential rains. The coast of Mississippi receives the worst of these types of storms, however, Tornadoes are another possibility. The most common months for tornadoes are March, April and November, although they can occur anytime in the year. They generally take a southwest to northeast path across the state. Summertime humidity is one of the worst weather offenders.
