Decatur
is a small town located in Newton County in central Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,841 residents. It's located along State Highway 15 and is the county seat. The population for the entire Newton County was 21,720 residents as of the 2010 census. The community of Decatur is home to East Central Community College and New County Academy. Turkey Creek Water Park is located just outside of town and offers fishing, water-skiing, camping and many other activities. Decatur is also near Bienville National Forest. Parts of the national forest are located within several Mississippi counties. In descending order of land area it lies in parts of Scott, Smith, Jasper and Newton Counties. Bienville National Forest contains 178,541 acres of mixed forests of pine and oak. The upper courses of the Leaf and Strong Rivers flow through the forest and offer boating and fishing. Marathon Lake and Shongelo Lake are also located within the national forest, in addition to several campgrounds and hiking trails. There are three Wildlife Management Areas within Beinville National Forest: Bienville WMA, Tallahalla WMA, and Caney Creek WMA. Each of these wildlife areas offer excellent hunting opportunities for whitetail deer, wild turkey, and various small game.

Central Mississippi has a humid, subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and short winters. In Mississippi, summer temperatures vary little from one part of the state to another. In winter, however, the southern coast is generally warmer than northern regions, due to the influence of the Gulf of Mexico. Humidity in summer is a problem statewide, with the comfort index being 26 out of 100, where the higher the number, the more comfortable. The north-central region of the state averages 53 inches of precipitation per year. Some snow usually falls in the northern and central sections. Mississippi lies in the path of hurricanes, although the southern coast is much more affected by these types of storms. Two tornado alleys cross the state, from the southwest to northeast.
