Meridian is located in Lauderdale County in east-central Mississippi. It's the sixth-largest city in the state, with a population of 40,921 as of 2013. Meridian is a lovely town, known for years for its arts and cultural organizations. The city is home to the Riley Center, the Meridian Museum of Art, the Meridian Little Theatre, and the Meridian Symphony Orchestra. One of the first art organizations in the city, The Meridian Art League, was established in February 1933. Jimmie Rodgers, known as the "Father of Country Music," was born here and Highland Park houses a museum that displays memorabilia of his life and career. The park is also home to the Highland Park Dentzel Carousel, a National Historic Landmark and the only two-row stationary Dentzel menagerie in existence in the world. In addition, Around Town Carousels Abound is a public arts project of 62 colorful carousel horses found around town, designed and painted by local artists. Another major attraction in Meridian is its lakes and parks. Bonita Lakes is a 3,300-acre park that includes 3 lakes, Long Creek Reservoir and Lakeview Golf Course. You'll also find hiking trails, equestrian trails, picnic facilities and pavilions, boat ramps, paddle boats and fishing at Bonita Lakes. Lake Okatibbee is another beautiful 3,800-acre lake for boating, fishing, swimming and water-skiing. Since 1992, Meridian has been host of the State Games of Mississippi, a state-wide annual multi-sport event modeled after the Olympic Games. Other attractions in Meridian are Dunn's Falls, the Causeyville General Store and much more.

Meridian Weather & Climate

East-central Mississippi , near the Alabama border, has a humid, subtropical climate with hot, muggy summers and mild, rainy winters. This region is one of the rainiest in the United States. Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. Snowfall is rare. Tropical storms and hurricanes are quite common off the Gulf of Mexico, and bring high winds and torrential rains. The coast of Mississippi receives the worst of these types of storms, however, Tornadoes are another possibility. The most common months for tornadoes are March, April and November, although they can occur anytime in the year. They generally take a southwest to northeast path across the state. Summertime humidity is one of the worst weather offenders.
