Columbia is an old city located in Marion County in southern Mississippi. It was settled six years prior to Mississippi becoming a state. Many of the early residents migrated from Columbia, South Carolina, for which the town was named. The population of Columbia is approximately 7,000 residents. Incorporated on June 25, 1819, Columbia served as the temporary capital of Mississippi from 1821 to 1822. An interesting note: former Mississippi governor and Columbian native, Hugh L. White introduced white squirrels to the area, and they are still quite common in Columbia City Park. The city of Columbia is known as "Home of the Mississippi Rodeo," made famous by two Mississippi cowboy brothers, Earl and Weldon Bascom. The brothers are called the "Founding Fathers of Mississippi Rodeo," for producing the very first rodeo in Marion County in 1935. Rodeos remain a popular event in Columbia and Marion County to this day. The city of Columbia is a quintessential town of the deep south, with old world charm along with modern amenities. Attractions include the Marion County Historical Museum, located just down the street from the old court house. The museum is home to the Marion County Historical Society, which hosts the Annual Heritage Festival and Flea Market each fall. For outdoor recreation, the Columbia area has lakes, campgrounds, parks and picnicking areas. Also, the Marion County Recreational Railroad provides train rides for educational purposes, social events and just plain fun.
