Port-Gibson
is a small, historic, city located between Vicksburg and Natchez on the Mississippi River in southwest Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,567. Port Gibson is a city of southern hospitality, stately 19th century homes, old plantations and historic battlefields. Several historical sites in town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Rabbit's Foot Company, established in 1900 by Patt Chappelle, an African-American theater owner from Tampa, Florida, was a leading vaudeville show with an all-black cast. After Chappelle's death in 1911, the company was taken over by Fred Swift Wolcott, a white farmer, who based the touring company in Port Gibson. A historic marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail commemorates the contribution the Rabbits Foot Company made to the development of the blues in Mississippi. Walking tours of Port Gibson take you to over 40 homes, churches and cemeteries, many dating back to the early 1800s. Along the walking tour, you'll also see Engelson House, site of the oldest formal gardens in Mississippi. For lodging, Port Gibson has a number of historic bed and breakfast inns, including the Canemount Plantation on the outskirts of town.

Northeastern Louisiana, along the Mississippi border, has a semi-tropical climate with very warm and humid summers and mild winters. Northeastern Louisiana is slightly drier and has slightly cooler temperatures in the wintertime than the southern part of the state. Prevailing winds from the south or southeast bring warm air and humidity to the area in spring and summer. Snow and ice is possible in northeastern Louisiana, but is rare. Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail, damaging winds and tornadoes are possible in the spring and summer.
