Vicksburg is a lovely old town located in Warren County in west-central Mississippi. It's located about 230 miles northwest of New Orleans along the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers, and lies 40 miles due west of Jackson. As of the 2010 census, the population of Vicksburg was 49,644. The city of Vicksburg is known for its beautiful historic homes, churches and government buildings. Two of the historic churches contain Tiffany stained-glass windows. For over five decades of the 1800s, the city was the cultural center for the aristocracy. The Old Court House (circa 1858) survived the American Civil War, and today houses a museum with over 10,000 artifacts dating from pre-Columbian times to present day. Every summer, Vicksburg plays host to the Miss Mississippi Pageant and Parade. Each spring, the Vicksburg Theatre Guild hosts Gold in the Hills, which is in the Guinness World Records book for longest running show. Downtown Vicksburg offers art galleries, specialty shops and a variety of restaurants and museums. Other places of interest to visit include McRaven House, reportedly to be "one of the most haunted houses in Mississippi," also The Corner Drug Store, which houses a collection of Civil War Artifacts. There's also The Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum, the Yesterday's Children Antique Doll and Toy Museum, the Children's Art Park at Catfish Row and over 32 murals by Robert Dafford along the floodwall on Levee Street. If you're into gaming, Vicksburg is home to dockside casinos offering 24-hours a day gambling and entertainment. Northeast Louisiana, near the Mississippi River, has a semi-tropical climate. Prevailing winds are from the south or southeast. Snow and ice is possible in northeastern Louisiana, but is rare. Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail, damaging winds and tornadoes are possible in the spring and summer. In mid-summer, temperatures are generally 90 degrees F. or higher. Winter temperature hover around a comfortable 60 degrees F., with very chilly mornings. The best time to visit is February through April, when heat and humidity are at lower levels.
