Natchez
is a city in Adams County in southwest Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 15,792. Natchez is located on the Mississippi River about 90 miles southwest of Jackson. A vibrant city, rich in the history of the South, Natchez has outdoor recreation, local festivals and events, restaurants, shopping, spa retreats, arts and culture. Settled in 1716 by French colonists, Natchez is one of the oldest European cities in the lower Mississippi River Valley. It's the southern terminus of the historic Natchez Trace Parkway, which commemorates the old route and covers 444 miles. There are many historic sites on the Parkway, including the Meriwether Lewis Museum and the Mississippi Craft Center. In addition, parts of the original Natchez Trace trail are still accessible. The city of Natchez is known for its beautiful plantations and well-preserved antebellum mansions. Casinos are located on the riverfront, one being a replica of a paddle-wheeler and the other fashioned after a 19th century sawmill. You can watch tugboats on the Mississippi River, or go canoeing or kayaking. Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through the charming downtown or explore on foot. Celebrate the history of the blues at the Natchez Bluff Blues Festival, or visit a family-run winery. Bluff Park has trails that overlook the river and golf and tennis are available at Duncan Park. Natchez has so much to see and do, it's sure to become a favorite family vacation destination.

Southwest Mississippi ,on the Louisiana border, has a humid, subtropical climate. Summers are long, hot and humid, and winters are short and mild. Average annual rainfall is 58 inches. Average annual snowfall is one inch, although many years see no snowfall at all. Southwest Mississippi lies in the path of two tornado alleys that run southwest to northwest across the state. The climate is also influenced by the Gulf of Mexico where tropical storms and hurricanes are possible in late summer and fall. The comfort index, which is based on humidity during the hot months, is 26 out of 100, with a higher number being more comfortable. The US average on the comfort index is 44.
