Walnut-Grove
is a small community located in Leake County in almost the exact center of the state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,911 residents. Walnut Grove is known for being home to Golden Memorial State Park, which is located just three miles east of the town. It reached via Mississippi Highway 492. Golden Memorial State Park features fishing on a 15-acre spring-fed lake stocked with bass, bream and catfish for fishing, 14 campsites, 2 cabins, a picnic area with grills, 2 picnic pavilions, and nature trails. Golden Memorial State Park memorializes post civil War with a one-room school once located on the grounds. The Loblolly Hiking Trail in the park features the second largest loblolly pine tree in the state of Mississippi. A Mississippi fishing license is required to fish in the lake, and there is no swimming allowed in the lake. The town of Walnut Grove began in another nearby location, which is now referred to as "Old Walnut Grove." The town was incorporated in 1884, and a post office established in 1854. The "new" Walnut Grove town was surveyed at its present site in 1923.

Central Mississippi has a humid, subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and short winters. In Mississippi, summer temperatures vary little from one part of the state to another. In winter, however, the southern coast is generally warmer than northern regions, due to the influence of the Gulf of Mexico. Humidity in summer is a problem statewide, with the comfort index being 26 out of 100, where the higher the number, the more comfortable. The north-central region of the state averages 53 inches of precipitation per year. Some snow usually falls in the northern and central sections. Mississippi lies in the path of hurricanes, although the southern coast is much more affected by these types of storms. Two tornado alleys cross the state, from the southwest to northeast.
