Water-Valley
is a small community in Yalobusha County in north-central Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,392 residents. Although small, Water Valley is a progressive town, loved by residents and visitors alike for its hometown feel and sense of community. The town is known for its Watermelon Carnival, named as one of the top 20 festival in the Southeastern U.S. by the Southeastern Tourism Society. The festival draws thousands of people to Water Valley and offers live music, entertainment, arts and crafts and lots of good food. It's held in picturesque City Park, which features a lovely gazebo flanked by tree-lined sidewalks. Other places to visit in Water Valley include Bozarts Art Gallery and Civic Auditorium, which as 600 seats and a performance stage. The auditorium is the site of community events such as performances by the Water Valley Ballet School and the Town & Country Garden Club Music Festival. Located at the far south end of Main Street, the 36-acre Crawford Sports Complex offers tennis courts, a quarter-mile track and ball fields. Nearby Enid Lake has fishing, boating, water-skiing and more. Various campgrounds are located in the Water Valley area, and George P. Cossar State Park has a swimming pool, camping, fishing, a horse trail, picnicking and a visitor's center. In addition, Water Valley is part of Mississippi's Hills Region, which is home to over 140 golf courses. The northwestern corner of Mississippi of Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate with some continental influence in the wintertime. Summers are very hot and humid and winters are pleasant and mild. Occasional cold snaps are possible in winter, but they do not last long. Northwestern Mississippi receives plentiful rainfall year round and snow is possible, but rare, in this area of the state. Tropical storms and hurricanes have an influence on the weather in all of Mississippi, but do not impact it as much as areas closer to the coast. Some low-lying regions may experience flooding during rainstorms. Humidity in summer often makes it very uncomfortable. Fast moving thunderstorms are possible year-round, but especially in the summer.
