Oxford is an old city located in Lafayette County in north-central Mississippi. Founded in 1837, the population as of 2013, is an estimated 20,865. Oxford is home to the University of Mississippi, founded in 1848, and known affectionately as "Ole Miss." Called "the Cultural Mecca of the South", Oxford has been named by USA Today as "one of the top six college towns in the nation." Also, it's included in "The Best 100 Small Towns in America." The courthouse square in Oxford, locally called "The Square," is the cultural center of the city. The Square is filled with specialty shops, boutiques, coffee shops and locally-owned restaurants. The J. E. Neilson Co., located on the southeast corner of the square, is the oldest documented store in the South USA. Oxford's close proximity to cities like Nashville and Memphis make it a regular stop for many bands and musicians who tour on a regular basis. Many special events take place in the town throughout the year, including the Thacker Mountain Radio Show, The Oxford Film Festival, or SEC ( Southeastern Conference) sporting events on the Ole Miss campus. The city of Oxford is also known for its exceptional restaurants. The northwestern corner of Mississippi of Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate with some continental influence in the wintertime. Summers are very hot and humid and winters are pleasant and mild. Occasional cold snaps are possible in winter, but they do not last long. Northwestern Mississippi receives plentiful rainfall year round and snow is possible, but rare, in this area of the state. Tropical storms and hurricanes have an influence on the weather in all of Mississippi, but do not impact it as much as areas closer to the coast. Some low-lying regions may experience flooding during rainstorms. Humidity in summer often makes it very uncomfortable. Fast moving thunderstorms are possible year-round, but especially in the summer.
