Tunica
is a town located in the northwest corner of Mississippi, near the Mississippi River. Until the 1990s, Tunica was considered one of the most impoverished places in the United States, semi-famous for the particularly depressed neighborhood known as "Sugar Ditch Alley," named for the open sewer located there. The town made an amazing turn-around and is now a fast-growing entertainment destination, on the fringe of a gambling resort area. Tunica is near major casinos that attract visitors from all over the Southeast, but particularly from nearby Memphis. Many top musicians perform in the multimillion dollar showrooms, and plush hotel accommodations and fine dining complete the experience. Outdoor recreation in the area includes championship golf and tennis, hiking, fishing, boating and picnicking. The town of Tunica and the surrounding casinos weren't in the path of Hurricane Katrina, as were many of the casinos along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. As a result, some of the regular Gulf Coast casino traffic drifted northward to Tunica County. The casinos lie outside the city limits, but the tax revenue from them is felt inside Tunica. They've provided major improvements and renovations to the downtown district, and long-term effects such as highway improvements are also visible in Tunica County. There is also ongoing discussion of expansion of the Tunica Municipal Airport.

The northwestern corner of Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate with some continental influence in the wintertime. Summers are very hot and humid and winters are pleasant and mild. Occasional cold snaps are possible in winter, but they do not last long. Northwestern Mississippi receives plentiful rainfall year round and snow is possible, but rare, in this area of the state. Tropical storms and hurricanes have an influence on the weather in all of Mississippi, but do not impact it as much as areas closer to the coast. Some low-lying regions may experience flooding during rainstorms. Humidity in summer often makes it very uncomfortable.

The closest airports in the area are the Memphis International airport (MEM) located about 33 miles northeast of Tunica in Memphis, Tennessee, the Millington Municipal airport (NQA) located approximately 54 miles northeast of Tunica in Millington, Tennessee, the Grenada Municipal airport (GNF) located roughly 67 miles south of Tunica in Grenada, Mississippi, and finally the Hazen Municipal airport (6M0) located around 71 miles west of Tunica in Hazen, Arkansas.
