Southaven
is located in the northwestern corner of Mississippi and is a suburb of the city of Memphis, Tennessee. As of the 2010 census, the population was 48,982. Although located in Mississippi, Southaven is actually one of the principal cities of the Memphis, Tennessee metropolitan area. It lies south of Whitehaven, which is a neighborhood of Memphis. The village of Southaven began when homebuilder, Kemmons Wilson, wanted to develop a few residential subdivisions just inside the Mississippi border that would serve as suburbs to Memphis. Incorporated in 1980, today it's one of the fastest-growing cities in the southeast U.S. The Memphis International Airport is just two miles north of the city limits. Attractions include a large-scale, open-air shopping mall called Southaven Towne Center and a large outlet mall scheduled to open in 2015. Southaven is host to the Southern Professional Hockey League team and the Mississippi River Kings hockey team. The River Kings has their home base at Landers Center, a 200,000 square-foot facility that hosts more than 1,000 events every year. Other attractions include Southaven's annual Springfest, which hosts the largest barbecue contest in the state of Mississippi. The Snowden Grove Amphitheatre is an outdoor venue that has hosted big-name acts such as Lynard Skynard and Brad Paisley. In addition, all of the attractions and entertainment of Memphis are within minutes of Southaven.

Memphis and the surrounding region has a moist continental climate, which means it has four distinct seasons with cold winters and hot summers. Spring and autumn can be varied and unpredictable with severe weather, like thunderstorms and strong winds. Summers are very humid thanks to moisture encroaching from the Gulf of Mexico, even though the temperature rarely reaches extreme highs. The humidity makes it feel hotter than it actually is. Winters can be cold with temperatures occasionally dipping below freezing. Memphis averages 5.7 inches of snow a year. There is plenty of rain to keep the region green, with showers and thunderstorms occurring in spring and summer. However, Memphis has sun for 64 percent of its days, which actually adds up to more sunny days per year than in Miami.
