Woodville is a picturesque small town tucked in the southwest corner of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population of Woodville was 1,096 residents. This is a very historic town; one of the oldest European-American towns in Mississippi, incorporated in 1811, prior to Mississippi's admission to the United States in 1817. Woodville is near the Mississippi River, situated between Natchez and Baton Rouge. The Woodville Republican newspaper was founded in 1823 and is the oldest surviving newspaper, and oldest business, in the state. Much of Woodville's architecture dates to the 19th century. The town is centered on a picturesque courthouse square that is filled with ancient oak trees. The courthouse is a beautiful turn-of-the-20th century Beaux-Arts style building. More than 100 buildings in Woodville are part of the National Register of Historic District and include examples of Federal, Arts and Crafts, Greek Revival, Beaux-Arts and Neo-Classical. The former railroad office is one of the oldest railroad office buildings in the U.S., and now houses the Wilkinson County Museum. The classic federal-style Branch Banking House of the State of Mississippi (c. 1819) is the state's oldest existing bank building. Today is contains an African-American Museum. Another note of historical interest;painter John James Audubon visited Woodville during the 1820s. Here he found more than 26 of the species which he documented and painted for his Birds of America series.

Woodville Weather & Climate

East central Louisiana, near the Mississippi River, has a subtropical climate that is warm and wet year round. This region experiences rain showers all year round, high temperatures and humidity during summer, and generally warm, sunny weather in the wintertime. The weather can be unpredictable in southeast Louisiana, and cold spells have been experienced in winter, but snowfall is rare. The best time to visit the area is between February and April, when the heat and humidity are not at peak levels. June is the start of hurricane season, but plenty of warning time is given for these types of storms.
