Mt-Olive
is located in Covington County in south-central Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 982 residents. The town is about 52 miles from the city of Jackson and 38 miles to Hattiesburg. Mississippi Highway 35 passes through the southern end of the town. Mount Olive began as a railroad town in 1899 and was incorporated in 1900. It was a central timber and agricultural trading center from its beginning, with three lumber companies located here within the first ten years of the town's existence. However, the cotton compress was another important business to the economy, with an average of 25,000 bales produced each year, with three cotton gins operating in town at one time. With Mount Olive's proximity to Hattiesburg, it's just a short drive to all of the attractions of the larger city. Some of these include the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum and the African American Military History Museum. Longleaf Trace, which is Mississippi's only certified Rails to Trails Conservancy project, offers a multi-use trail spanning 42 miles from Hattiesburg to Prentiss, Mississippi. The Hattiesburg Zoo is another favorite tourist attraction near Mt. Olive. Also, not to be overlooked, the Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood District, a 25-block neighborhood that has one of the best collections of renovated Victorian-era houses in the state.

South-central Missisippi has a humid, subtropical climate. Summers are hot and winters are mild and there is no dry season. Precipitation is possible year-round, which is the main thing that distinguishes a subtropical climate from a Mediterranean climate (such as experienced in California.) The hot season lasts from May to September with an average daily high temperature above 84°F. The hottest month of the year is July. The winter season lasts from December to February with average temperatures in the 40s to 60s F. Snowfall is rare. In summer, high humidity combined with high temperatures can make it seem very uncomfortable. Mississippi is in the path of tropical storms and hurricanes, and may cause heavy winds and torrential rainfall.
