Jackson
is the capital and largest city in Mississippi, located in the south-central part of the state. It's south of the Yazoo River and considered the southern border of the Mississippi Delta region. The city is the anchor for the entire Jackson metropolitan area, which covers five Mississippi counties: Copiah, Hinds, Madison, Rankin, and Simpson. As of 2012, the Jackson metropolitan area had a population of 576,800. Jackson's motto is "City with Soul," due to the numerous musicians from the area that are prominent in the blues, gospel and jazz. For decades, Jackson was known for its illegal nightclubs on the Gold Coast region. Jackson has a long, illustrious history, from its beginnings as home to the Choctaw Indian Nation, through the southern Antebellum period, Civil War, early 20th century and beyond. The city has recently spent 1.6 billion in downtown development, renovation and improvements to public buildings and amenities. Just a few of the attractions include the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center, the Jackson Zoological Park, and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson was named in the Top 10 "Most Amazing Baseball Museums in America," by ESPN. The city of Jackson has everything from the world-class Mississippi Symphony Orchestra to authentic blues juke joints. For outdoor recreation, Jackson is home to many parks and sports venues. The Jackson Zoo is one of the city's oldest attractions, and offers over 700 animals in a heavily wooded and beautifully landscaped refuge. LeFleur's Bluff State Park contains 500 acres of woodlands with hiking trails, a fishing lake, camping, golf, swimming, playgrounds and picnic areas.

Central Mississippi has a humid, subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and short winters. In Mississippi, summer temperatures vary little from one part of the state to another. During winter, however, the southern coast is much warmer than northern regions, due to the influence of the Gulf of Mexico. Humidity in summer is a problem statewide, with the comfort index being 26 out of 100, where the higher the number, the more comfortable. The north-central region of the state averages 53 inches of precipitation per year. Some snow usually falls in the northern and central sections. Mississippi lies in the path of hurricanes, although the southern coast is much more affected by these types of storms. Two tornado alleys cross the state from the southwest to northeast.
