Pickwick-Lake is a 47,500-acre reservoir in the northeast corner of Mississippi at the border of Tennessee. It stretches from Pickwick Landing Dam to Wilson Dam. Pickwick Lake contains two state parks: Tennessee's Pickwick Landing State Park and Mississippi's J P Coleman State Park. The lake has excellent sport-fishing areas, including the Wilson Dam tailwater at the upper end of the reservoir, noted for record-size smallmouth bass and catfish. Another favorite spot is the discharge basin at Colbert Fossil Plant west of Sheffield, Alabama, where the warm water discharged from the power plant attracts fish during cold weather. Pickwick Lake also contains Yellow Creek Cove and Yellow Creek Waterfall, which is a popular destination for boaters. A rope swing off the top of the waterfall has been present for many years. Mississippi's J P Coleman State Park was named for James P. Coleman, a former governor of the state of Mississippi. The park is located approximately 10 miles north of the town of Iuka off Mississippi Highway 25. The park offers swimming, boating, waterskiing and fishing for smallmouth bass. It also contains primitive and developed campsites, cabins, cottages, motel, a swimming pool, visitors center, picnic areas, and a miniature golf course.

Pickwick Lake Weather & Climate

Southwestern Tennessee has a mild climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are usually warm and humid, with cooler temperatures in the mountains. Winters tend to be mild and wet. Spring and autumn can be varied and unpredictable with severe weather, like thunderstorms and strong winds. Summers temperatures are not extreme, but the high level of humidity makes it feel hotter than it actually is. Of course, these general patterns are affected by topography: the higher mountain areas tend to have milder summers as well as colder, more blustery winters. Southern Tennessee averages about 5 inches of snow per year. Severe storms are infrequent in the state, being east of the center of tornado activity, south of most blizzard conditions, and too far inland to be affected by hurricanes.
