Long-Beach
is a city located in Harrison County along the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,792 residents. The city of Long Beach is part of the Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area and all the attractions of the two larger cities are just a short drive away. Long Beach began as an agricultural town, based on growing radishes. In the early 1900s, it became known as "The Radish Capital of the World". Eventually, the long red radishes which were grown here weren't as popular as the more common button radish. This caused a dramatic decline in the agriculture of the area, so the city moved toward tourism to boost its local economy. Many high-rise condominiums were built along the beaches of Long Beach and it became a popular resort town. Just 19 days following the city's centennial celebration, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, destroying more than 90 percent of all the buildings in the town. Many Long Beach residents lost their homes, and others had much water and wind damage. The city is still recovering from Hurricane Katrina today. Many residents have returned and the beaches and condos have been repaired. Unfortunately, however, the city has not seen a return of business that it enjoyed prior to the hurricane, in part due to the building codes established after Katrina and to the general economic downturn.

The south-central coast of Mississippi has a tropical climate that is defined by the Gulf of Mexico. Winters are short and mild and summers are long and humid. Winter temperatures average in the upper 50s. Summer temperatures range from the lower 80s in May to the mid 90s by August. Thunderstorms are possible in the summertime. Average annual rainfall is 62 inches. Snowfall is rare. During the spring and fall months, temperatures are usually very pleasant with lots of sunshine. Mississippi lies in the path of hurricanes moving northward from the Gulf of Mexico during the late summer and fall.
